PAEDIATRIC FIRST AID
The Paediatric First Aid course provides theoretical and practical training in first aid techniques that are specific to infants aged under 1, and children aged from 1 year old to the onset of puberty. Learners will become familiar with the role of the paediatric first aider and be able to assess and react appropriately to an emergency situation, such as a child or an infant who is unresponsive, has an airway obstruction, has breathing difficulties or is suffering from shock or anaphylaxis.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This qualification is designed for those learners wishing to become a paediatric first aider in the workplace with a responsibility for the welfare of infants and children. This qualification is intended for learners already working or preparing to work in industry.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN?
The content of the course will cover how to deal with the following:
UNIT 1 : Emergency Paediatric First Aid
Upon completion of unit 1 the learner will be able to:
- Understand the role and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider
- Assess an emergency situation safely
- Provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
- Provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally
- Provide first aid for an infant and a child who has a foreign body airway obstruction
- Administer first aid to an infant and a child with external bleeding
- Understand how to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is suffering from shock
- Understand how to provide first aid to an infant and a child with anaphylaxis
UNIT 2 : Managing paediatric illness, injuries and emergencies
Upon completion of unit 2 the learner will be able to:
- Administer first aid to an infant and a child with injuries to bones, joints and muscles
- Administer first aid to an infant and a child with head and spinal injuries
- Administer first aid to an infant and a child with conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose
- Administer emergency first aid to an infant and a child with a chronic medical condition or sudden illness
- Administer first aid to an infant and a child who is experiencing the effects of extreme heat or cold
- Administer first aid to an infant and a child who has sustained an electric shock
- Administer first aid to an infant and a child with burns or scalds
- Administer first aid to an infant and a child who has been poisoned
- Administer first aid to an infant and a child who has been bitten or stung
- Administer first aid to an infant and a child with minor injuries
- Complete records relating to illnesses, injuries and emergencies
ASSESSMENT
The practical assessment of learners for the qualification is completed throughout the course delivery. This ongoing assessment will involve learners demonstrating practical first aid skills across a number of areas.
Learners are required to answer a series of questions ensuring their understanding of the theory content is sufficient to meet the required standard. Oral questioning can be used to extract further information for these questions during the practical assessments, with the tutor documenting the responses, or when needing to supplement learners’ written responses, according to individual learners’ needs.
