WHAT YOU WILL LEARN?
UNIT 1 – FIRST AID AT WORK
This unit provides learners with the skills and knowledge to deal with a range of casualties and aligns with guidance on first-aid training as illustrated in HSE Regulations 1981. The content of the unit will cover how to deal with the following:
- Role and responsibilities of a first aider
- Incident and conduct casualty surveys
- Casualties who are breathing normally
- Casualties who are NOT breathing normally
- Recognising and assisting a casualty who is choking
- Casualties with external bleeding
- Casualties who are in shock
- Casualties with injuries to bones, muscles and joints.
The assessment of this unit should include both theory and practical activities to ensure learners are able to meet all of the required qualification criteria. The practical criteria in this unit can be assessed through simulation, which includes learning outcomes 2-15.
UNIT 2 – MEDICAL INTELLIGENCE AND ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS
This unit requires learners to identify medical risks within the place of work and research measures to support these risks within their surrounding environment, whilst complying with organisational procedures. The content of the unit will cover how to deal with the following:
The assessment of this unit is theory based, however practical activities can be undertaken to support learning and development. It is envisaged that learners will complete this unit away from the course as it involves research around their place of work. This evidence should be presented back to the assessor for formal assessment.
UNIT 3 – CORRECT USE OF AN AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR
This unit provides learners with the skills and knowledge to support good practice in the safe, prompt and effective use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) in effort to preserve life and promote recovery.
The assessment of this unit should include both theory and practical activities to ensure learners are able to meet all of the required qualification criteria. The practical criteria in this unit can be assessed through simulation, which includes learning outcomes 2.
YOU’LL ALSO RECEIVE…
Each learner will receive a first aid handbook and training kit.
CERTIFICATION
Successful candidates receive a certificate, valid for three years.
QUALIFICATION
The Level 3 Award in First Aid Response is a qualification that sits outside of the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF), however it may support the completion of such accredited provision.
The Highfield Level 3 Award in First Aid Response is designed to support learners in gaining a more comprehensive understanding of first aid along with an understanding of how important medical/environmental intelligence is when dealing with a range of casualties.
In line with industry guidance, the qualification supports/approves first aiders for a period of 3 years, at which point learners will need to resit the course, however the recommendation is that learners refresh their knowledge annually.
